Our Idiot Brother

Rated R 96 minutes 2011

Paul Rudd stars as a small-town hippie so trustingor is it stupid?that in the opening scene he agrees to sell pot to a uniformed police officer. Paroled from prison, he returns to the enveloping embrace of his mother and his three unhappy sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, Zooey Deschanel), whose generic personal problems are exacerbated by his stupidity (or is it trust?). Like Nicole Holofcener's Please Give (2010), this turns on the friction between an unusually altruistic character and the self-centered people around him, though screenwriters David Schisgall and Evgenia Peretz never pursue their premise into the sort of moral comedy that so distinguished the other movie. Given the thinness of the script, I'm surprised so many name actors signed on; rounding out the cast are Steve Coogan, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, and Kathryn Hahn. Jesse Peretzson of New Republic publisher Marty Peretz. (96 min.)
