Otis Taylor

When: Sun., Sept. 5, 8 & 10 p.m. 2010

Blues guitarist, banjo player and songwriter Otis Taylor's free form vamps, bleak lyrics and powerful vocal style make him a unique voice in today's blues scene. Taylor defines himself as an African American folk musician and singer-songwriter as much as a bluesman. His sound harks back to a time when rural Southern musicians, black and white, shared an interest in murder ballads, Gospel singing, and homemade dance music, before those styles were segregated into "race" and "hillbilly" records. Taylor's moody playing, atmospheric vocals, and powerful lyrics always speak honestly to America's continuing racial problems. Otis Taylor and his band plays Sunday, September 5, 8 & 10 Biscuits & Blues (401 Mason St., San Francisco) $18
