Only God Forgives

Rated R 90 minutes 2013

Nicolas Winding Refn, the Danish brain behind Drive and Bronson, turns in an even more stylized, even more mystifying, far more violent and lurid crime shockfest in this radical combination art film/grisly actioner. Ryan Gosling, as impassive as ever, stars as Julian, an American expat up to his beady eyeballs in Muay Thai kickboxing and drug smuggling in Bangkok. Push comes to shove when Julian’s brother crosses the line of unacceptable farang behavior and a ruthless Thai police inspector (Vithaya Pansringarm) enters the picture, followed by the brothers’ mother, a vicious crime boss (Kristin Scott Thomas). Then the close-ups and blood begin to flow. Very likely a milestone in warped role-playing for actors Gosling and Scott Thomas, for writer-director Refn we suspect it’s just another day at the office. At any rate, it’s one you’ll not soon forget (89 min.)
