Ong Bak 2: The Beginning

Rated R 114 minutes 2009

Unimaginatively plotted yet handsomely staged, this energetic prequel to Thai action star Tony Jaa’s 2003 martial arts epic takes us through the hellacious formative years of the orphan Tien, who’s determined to fight every warrior, demon, and crocodile in the vicinity of the 15th-century kingdom of Ayutthaya, Thailand until he slays the cad who offed his dad. Contains about five minutes of peace and quiet, not counting the perfunctory temple dance scene. Kid can take a punch. Directed by Jaa and writer Panna Rittikai (98 min.).
