One Day

Rated PG-13 108 minutes 2011

A meek wallflower (Anne Hathaway) meets a spoiled, rich ladies’ man (Jim Sturgess) on university graduation day in 1988, and their romance – the love of both their lives, really – never takes root. But they keep crossing paths as his life grows harder and hers easier, by slow degrees. This mawkish romance, as adapted by David Nicholls from his bestselling novel and directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education), functions as the weak sister (evil twin?) of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise movies. Scherfig deserves better. It boils down to the two would-be lovers – Hathaway’s Emma can carry it by sheer personality, Sturgess’ Dexter can’t. One definite plus: There are absolutely no Margaret Thatcher jokes. (104 min.)
