Rated PG-13 111 min. 2010

A lonely Irish fisherman named Syracuse (Colin Farrell) discovers what appears to be a “selkie” -- a beautiful, mythical, female sea creature -- in his trawling net one day, and they fall in love. If anyone other than filmmaker Neil Jordan were doing this, we’d automatically flinch. But Jordan (The Crying Game, Michael Collins) has a way with such fairytales, and the watery landscape of the Beara Peninsula in County Cork is made for romantic legends. Jordan’s cast contributes to the charming story as well. Farrell is dependably stoic, Polish actor Alicja Bachleda is appropriately mysterious as the moist Ondine, and Alison Barry, as Syracuse’s disabled daughter, is full of blarney and bright as a new penny. Jordan wrote and directed (111 min.).
