Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood

Rated R 159 minutes 2019

Quentin Tarantino tells us everything he knows – or at least the way he always imagined it to be – about the entertainment scene in 1969 Los Angeles, and how the antics of a washed-up action-movie star (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double buddy (Brad Pitt) dovetail into the crimes of the Manson family of crazed hippie murderers. DiCaprio and Pitt are both in fine fighting trim, backed up by an army of celebrity bit parts and sly cameos, from Margot Robbie (as Sharon Tate) and Al Pacino (a smarmy producer) to Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell, Martin Kove, Dakota Fanning, the late Luke Perry in his final role, Emile Hirsch, Clu Gulager, Scoot McNairy, et al. As usual, Tarantino’s dialogue sparkles in their mouths, and the meandering plot is full of welcome and often quite hilarious surprises. It really doesn’t mean a damned thing, but it’s one of Tarantino’s finest.
