On the Road

Rated R 139 minutes 2012

Movie tributes to Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation come along with regularity every few years, but Walter Salles’ adaptation (with José Rivera) of the writer’s landmark novel proves the hang-loose boho impulse is still alive in the 21st century. Garrett Hedlund portrays alpha beatnik Dean Moriarty as the original nutty hipster saint. He’s irresistible, and the rest of the cast – Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Elisabeth Moss, Tom Sturridge, Kristen Stewart, Terrence Howard, and Sam Riley as Kerouac stand-in Sal Paradise – mix it up in suitably frantic fashion in New York, San Francisco, and Mexico. The Salles version is probably unnecessary, but we could say that for Kerouac and his mad, swingin’, ecstatic gang in general. Who needs it? We do. (124 min.)
