Old Crow Medicine Show

When: Sat., Nov. 8, 9 p.m. 2008

Sporting a moniker that may has well have come straight out of the Coen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Old Crow Medicine Show unsurprisingly traffics in the kind of fiddle-kissed mountain music that defined the neo-bluegrass revival of a few years back. Having honed its chops touring with the likes of Merle Haggard, the Del McCoury Band, and Dolly Parton, in addition to having appeared on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion, the Nashville-based quintet tapped über-producer Don Was for the recently released Tennessee Pusher. Thankfully, the pop-oriented Was took a hands-off approach and allowed the band to record Southern gothic-flavored songs with hustlers, murderers, and other seedy characters setting the mood. Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins adds to the sturm-and-twang ambience at the Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8. 9 p.m., $28.50.
