Of Gods and Men

Rated PG-13 122 minutes 2011

High in the rolling hills of Algeria in the mid-1990s, a group of French Roman Catholic monks lives the monastic life — meditating, praying, studying, and providing medical care for people in the nearby village. But their solitude is threatened by a band of anti-government Islamist rebels who see them as part of the “organized plundering” of French colonization. Director Xavier Beauvois (Le Petit Lieutenant) keeps the drama hushed and expectant as the monks themselves, with a sagely performance by veteran actor Michael Lonsdale as Brother Luc. Scenario by Etienne Comar, adapted by Beauvois. Lambert Wilson costars as Brother Christian. (122 min.)
