Oaklavia: Come Play in the Street

When: Sun., June 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. 2010

In the three years since its inception, San Francisco's Sunday Streets -- which temporarily restricts vehicle traffic on city roadways a few Sundays per year -- has become incredibly popular, drawing thousands of people to each occasion. Now Oakland is getting in on the action with Oaklavia. At the inaugural event, on Sunday, June 27, organized by nonprofit advocacy group Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, streets will be closed from Jack London Square to Uptown for biking, rollerblading, walking, and the like. There will also be organized activities for children and adults, including live music, bike safety classes, a "Thriller" dance tutorial, and a circus-arts performance. 10 a.m.-2 p.m., free.
