.Oakland’s Budget Deficit Nears $100 Million

The City of Oakland’s budget deficit, recently projected at $83 million, is now approaching $100 million because this year’s tax revenues have taken a nosedive, according to the Trib. The city’s revenues this year are expected to be $16 million less than expected, meaning the total deficit is now about $99 million. Mayor Ron Dellums is proposing that the city lay off 140 cops, along with a host of other sweeping cuts, to balance the budget. But as the Trib points out again today, the mayor does not plan to go through with the police officer layoffs if the city receives a $67 million federal grant over the next three years. One of the provisions of the federal grant is that it can be awarded if a city can show that police officers will lose their jobs.
