Oaklandish Radio Regatta

When: Sun., Aug. 17, 12-5 p.m. and Sun., Aug. 23, 1-7 p.m. 2009

Oaklandish embraces a different version of civil society -- one where gondolas tool across LakeMerritt while pirate DJs broadcast from the sailboat house nearby. The organization's annual Radio Regatta celebrates leisurely, aquatic forms of transport and low-power FM. This year's iteration features a stellar lineup of DJs: Issa, LN, Donguapo, Joe Quixx, Marmar, and Spinnerty, all transmitting live on Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Lake Merritt Sailboat House (568 Bellevue Ave.). Plus food, beer, free gondola rides, and half-price boat rentals. The regatta has become an Oaklandish summer tradition, along with urban capture the flag (held in downtown Oakland), salsa by the lake, and the famed Liberation Drive-In (an outdoor pirate movie theater). 1-7 p.m., free.
