.Oakland Port Backs Out of Pollution Promises

As reports found cancer spikes in West Oakland, and the diesel exhaust from trucks were identified as a major culprit, the Oakland Port Commission promised to do something about it. Now, the Contra Costa Times reports, they’ve decided to let West Oakland stew in smog instead. On November 19, the Commission voted to postpone indefinitely (read: kill) a promise to contribute $5 million to a fund to install exhaust filters on hundreds of trucks that rumble in and out of West Oakland, picking up and dropping off freight at the port. The Commission also decided to table a plan to cut pollution and require new container fees from freight companies to fund the effort. Now, both environmental activists and air quality district officials are furious at the port’s, shall we say, change of heart.
