Oakland Heritage Alliance Summer Walking Tour: F.M. "Borax" Smith Estate

When: Sat., July 7, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 2012

Oakland is a city steeped in history -- but sometimes it takes an organization like the Oakland Heritage Alliance to remind us of its rich past. That's why the group's Summer Walking Tours are an invaluable asset to anyone curious about the history behind the city's neighborhoods and landmarks. This year's tour season, which runs Saturdays and Sundays from July 7 through August 26, begins on Saturday, July 7, with a two-mile tour of the estate of Francis Marion "Borax" Smith, one of the city's most famous entrepreneurs (meet at the corner of McKinley Ave. and Home Pl. East) followed on Sunday, July 8, with a tour of late notables buried in the Mountain View Cemetery (meet at the Chapel of the Chimes at 4499 Piedmont Ave.). 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., $5-$15. 510-763-9218 or

Price: $5-$15
