Oakland East Bay Symphony

When: Fri., May 13, 7 p.m. 2011

Kurt Weill and Langston Hughes' Broadway opera, Street Scene, deserves to be widely known. Its music is a delight, with wonderful tonal arias and jazz-flavored classical chromaticism. The subject matter -- love, power, greed, and the aspirations of every person -- seem as relevant today as they were when the opera premiered in the late 1940s. Now, Oakland East Bay Symphony, under the leadership of the imaginative Michael Morgan, presents an almost complete concert version as the fourth installment in its American Masterworks Series. In addition to such well-respected soloists as Angela Cadelago, Kristin Clayton, Kirk Eichelberger, Thomas Glenn, and Zachary Gordin, performers include the Oakland Symphony Chorus under Lynne Morrow and the Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir under Robert Geary. Don't miss the preconcert talk by John Kendall Bailey at 7 pm. Head to the Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland) on Friday, May 13. 8 p.m.,$20-$65. OEBS.org
