Oakland East Bay Symphony Season Finale

Oakland East Bay Symphony

When: Fri., May 14, 8 p.m. and Sun., May 16, 2 p.m. 2010

While the Berkeley Arts Festival goes out on a limb this month with a host of unusual, small-scaled concerts, the Oakland East Bay Symphony and Oakland Symphony Chorus go for maximum impact and contrast by pairing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which ends with the "Ode to Joy," with Jake Heggie's song cycle The Deepest Desire: Four Meditations on Love. The latter, sung by mezzo LaynaChianakas, is based on the poetry of Sister Helen Prejean of Dead Man Walking. The soloists for the Beethoven, while not stentorian, are excellent. At the Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland) on Friday, May 14, at 8 p.m and Sunday, May 16, at 2 p.m. $20-65. 800-745-3000 or OEBS.org

Price: $25-$65
