When: Wed., April 27, 7 p.m. 2011
You'd have to be not paying attention to miss the slow decline of the bookstore. A couple months ago, Border's declared bankruptcy, while in January, Amazon announced that sales of its eBooks had officially overtaken those of the dead-tree variety. Closer to home, we've seen Cody's and Comic Relief go under as declining revenues continue to plague the Bay Area's remaining indie bookstores. One of those bookstores, Oakland's Diesel (5433 College Ave.) presents a "community dialogue" on Wednesday, April 27, about the state of the bookstore - and indeed the book itself - in the face of Amazon and eReaders, and about how local merchants can serve readers and continue to make a profit. It probably won't be the most uplifting conversation you'll have all week, but it's important. 7 p.m., free. 510-653-9965 or DieselBookstore.com.
