More of the same. The further travails of Joe (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Tracy Martin at different ages), the sexually obsessive/compulsive heroine of Lars von Trier’s maddeningly pretentious, densely allusive, decidedly anti-erotic portrait of a woman with things on her mind and half the male population of Europe on her body. Gainsbourg’s performance is once again the saving grace, sketchily supported by Jamie Bell, Shia LaBeouf, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth, and Stellan Skarsgård as Joe’s confessor, Seligman. Much more interesting as a window into writer-director von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Melancholia) than as a narrative in its own right (123 min.).
