NYE Balkan Bash

When: Sat., Dec. 31, 8 p.m. 2011

Ring in the new year with the annual Balkan Bash, featuringBrass Menazeri, the nine-piece gang of brigands that plays the dance music of Serbia, Bosnia, Greece, and Eastern European gypsies, with a sensibility that owes just as much to jazz, punk, Bollywood, and funk is it does to the Balkans. The band members may play in odd meters but your feet won't be confused, thanks to the group's driving energy and sparkling musicianship. Openers include Edessa, a six-piece band specializing in the music of Balkan gypsies, and Joe Finn and Leslie Bonnett, who mix the music of Scandinavia with the Cajun sounds of Louisiana. At Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) on Saturday, Dec. 31. 8 p.m., $20. Ashkenaz.com
