Nowhere Boy

Rated R 97 min. 2010

Who knew that John Lennon was such a Freudian rock ‘n’ roller? This sensitive (perhaps overly so) narrative account of the Liverpool teenage years of the founding Beatle wants us to believe that young John’s (Aaron Johnson) relationship with his estranged mum Julia (Anne-Marie Duff) skirted the openly sexual, whilst steady, dependable Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) provided him with something to rebel against. If anything, the scenario – from the memoir by John’s sister Julia Baird, adapted by writer Matt Greenhalgh – shows that Lennon’s life was big enough to be broken into episodes with nothing lost. Johnson, Duff, and Scott Thomas all contribute flavorful perfs. (98 min.)
