The sound of up-tempo eighth notes on a floor tom with the resonance of a cardboard box is an inexhaustible source of listening pleasure. On Nots’ 2014 debut, We Are Nots, it’s the first and last thing you hear, and a constant throughout. The other elements — descending keyboard vamps, writhing guitar riffs, trenchant duo-syllabic shouts — glean velocity from that basic trap kit undertow. It’s especially helpful that We Are Nots sounds like it was recorded live, rather than multi-tracked and overly overdubbed, which tends to render propulsive bands into diminished specters of themselves onstage. Birthers believe that Nots were formulated in test tubes in the back of totemic Memphis garage label and store, Goner Records, just like affiliated acts Ex-Cult and Toxie, but at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records (420 40th St., Oakland) on Monday, the group will demonstrate that such live feel can’t be synthesized.
