Not Fade Away

Rated NR 110 minutes 2013

David Chase, creator of The Sopranos, wrote and directed this sweet, nostalgic drama about a New Jersey rock band and the people connected to it during the 1960s, portrayed as a time of endless wide-open possibilities. The story doesn’t tell us anything we haven’t seen in a hundred garage-band movies. Its will-o’-the-wisp magic is in the way it tells us what’s going beneath the surface with Doug (John Magaro), his girlfriend Grace (Bella Heathcote), his bandmate Gene (Jack Huston), and how it was for them trying to catch the wave that always seemed to be crashing somewhere else. Kudos as well for James Gandolfini as Doug’s working-stiff dad and Dominique McElligott as Grace’s sister Joy. More than the sum of its parts, thanks to Chase’s loving touch. (112 min.)
