Nostalgia for the Light

Rated NR 2010

The ultra-dry Atacama Desert in northern Chile attracts astronomers from all over the world because of its clear air — but sharing the terrain with the scientists are relatives of victims of that country’s military junta, circa 1970s, who still search for the bones of the “disappeared” in the hard, crusty earth. This moving documentary by Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán (The Battle of Chile) begins as a philosophical tone poem about the shared visions of astronomers and archaeologists, but reverts to Guzmán’s political investigations at the halfway mark. For him, Chile’s national shame seems to overpower even the stars. (90 min.)
