No Sex Please, We're British

When: Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m. Continues through Aug. 16 2008

Alistair Foot and Anthony Marriott's farce No Sex Please, We're British was roundly panned by the papers when it debuted in London in 1971 and flopped on Broadway two years later. Nevertheless, its initial West End run went on for nearly ten years, and the show gets performed pretty regularly by community theaters. Right now, in fact, director Paula Chenoweth is staging it at Broadway West Theatre Company (4000 Bay St., Fremont), not to be confused with San Francisco's Off-Broadway West. Can such public appeal possibly be wrong? Well, as the enduring popularity of Cats and The Mousetrap have taught us, of course it can. But No Sex does have a really great name, and the plot? Something having to do with a newlywed bride mail-ordering some Scandinavian glassware, but what comes instead is porn, lots and lots of porn. But ... but she's British!
