Director Kelly Reichardt and her screenwriting partner Jonathan Raymond, once again working in Oregon (in the wake of Old Joy
, Wendy and Lucy
, and Meek’s Cutoff
), churn up much suspense in the involving story of a trio of environmental radicals – played by Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, and Peter Sarsgaard – and their plan to blow up a hydroelectric dam. What if they’re not quite ready for the lawbreaking life? An ideal cast, armed with apt Ecotopia locations, a large helping of careful social commentary, and Reichardt’s sure-handed direction, make for a thought-provoking character study full of odd, even disturbing flavors (113 min.).
