New York Dolls

When: Wed., March 5, 8 p.m. 2008

Even though a younger generation of music fans might better know David Johansen as ubiquitous lounge lizard Buster Poindexter, he made his greatest mark fronting the New York Dolls. Serving as an intersection between punk, glam, '60s girl groups, and '50s rock 'n' roll, the Dolls inadvertently helped plant the seeds for both the New York City and UK punk scenes. That they ended up being under-appreciated in their own time and undone by the scourge of drug abuse makes them the quintessential music industry cautionary tale. Reunited with founding members Johansen and guitarist Syl Sylvain in this latest incarnation, the Dolls are bringing their attitude and lipstick swagger to a new generation of rock fans. With Ohio glam-rockers We Are the Fury on Wednesday, March 5 at the Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco).8 p.m., $29.50. TheFillmore.com
