If you thought Grateful Dead shows ran late, try what has become the Ashkenaz year-end tradition: Balkan New Year's Eve. They may finish before the sun comes up. Maybe not. But from the start, this is a fun dance for all ages, a great way to do something with the whole family. Monday night at the Berkeley non-profit hall, Edessa headlines and plays host with its traditional Balkan string band (with clarinet, accordion, and wild rhythms). The bay's premier horn ensemble, Brass Menazeri demonstrates that rock bands have nothing on Balkan brass for volume and energy.
