New Wave Choreographers Showcase

When: Fri., Feb. 26, 8 p.m. and Sun., Feb. 28, 7 p.m. 2010

Dance is a vital force in African-American culture, yet many artists experience a relative dearth of performance opportunities. In response, the Black Choreographers Festival celebrates the talents of up-and-coming young African and African-American dance artists with the Next Wave Choreographers Showcase. A dozen burgeoning choreographers -- including Savage Jazz company member Antoine Hunter, Studio Rue Dance founder and Congo expat Byb Chanel Bibene, and Afro-modernist Michael Velez, who performs with Robert Moses Kin -- will show their stuff at Dance Mission Theater (3316-24th St., San Francisco) Friday through Sunday. Visit the festival web site for the exact lineup, which is different on each day. The Friday show will be followed by a curtain talk, and the Saturday show includes a tribute to Haiti by Porsha Jefferson -- how to choose? Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m.; $10-$20. 415-273-4633 or

Price: $10-$20
