Open Mike Eagle is one of the best alternative rappers of the past decade. It should come as exciting news to his tightknit fanbase that he’s co-hosting a comedy variety show with comedian Baron Vaugh. The show New Negroes, which is named after a Harlem Renaissance era book that collected essays, fiction and poems of the new, and important voices in black America (Langston Hughes, W.E.B. DuBois, etc) that were telling their own stories and discussing identity in ways that challenged stereotypes. Eagle and Vaughn, who’ve been doing the show at LA theaters for a few years, and on Comedy Central since early 2019, hope to take the concept and update it to the modern era where nuance of the Black experience is explored. But more than anything, they aim to challenge the notion that “Black entertainment” is some sort of monolith. They bring on comedians and musicians that have diverse opinions and styles, even ones that contradict one another.
