Neruda

Rated R 107 minutes 2016

Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín follows up his provocative Jackie with another quicksilver tale from the overlooked side of history: the life and times of Pablo Neruda, internationally renowned poet, communist legislator, and free-spirited political gadfly during that country’s rightward tilt in the post-WWII era. Actor Luis Gnecco takes the perfect ironic trickster tone as the puckish poet, with Mercedes Morán as his jet-setter wife and Gael García Bernal as a government cop assigned to bring Neruda in, no questions asked. What follows is more of a breezy stream of consciousness – although studded with breathtaking dramatic moments – than a standard-brand chase thriller. Guillermo Calderón’s screenplay and Larraín’s piquant scene-setting are marvels of characterization (107 min., 2016, rated R) (K.V.)
