Neil Young Trunk Show

Rated NR 82 min. 2010

Director Jonathan Demme follows up on his 2006 doc Neil Young: Heart of Gold with this more purely performance-based film, taken from a concert at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. Young plays unplugged and plugged-in versions of such NY songbook faves as “No Hidden Path,” “Sad Movies,” “Like a Hurricane,” and “Cinnamon Girl.” The drone-y, dirge-like songs are so long that the tour’s resident on-stage painter has time to paint the next song’s title card while the previous one is being played. For Young fans, a valuable document of their aging troubadour’s appeal. He may look like an old coot with a guitar, but shut your eyes and presto! -- it’s a young man’s music (82 min., 2009, not rated).
