While everyone is talking about the departure of the A’s, Concord’s leaders are busy grappling with the ramifications of a different big deal that happened right under their noses. After negotiating for months with city representatives, the Navy Department has allegedly stunned everyone by announcing it might sell the Concord Naval Weapons Station to a developer known as the Shaw Group, which has a long record of military construction. According to the Contra Costa Times, Concord Mayor Susan Bonilla is outraged at the billion-dollar betrayal, complaining, “We had the Navy officials to our house. We gave them cookies and punch. It’s going to be tough to rebuild that.” Should’ve spiked that punch, madame mayor.
