Nanking

Rated R 107 minutes 2008

Thorough, sincere, and depressing as hell, this American-produced historical documentary on the Rape of Nanking in 1937 relates the horrors of the Japanese invasion of that Chinese city using actors (Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway, Rosalind Chao, Jürgen Prochnow, et al.) reading eyewitness accounts, graphic newsreel footage, and the talking-head remembrances of both the Chinese victims and the Japanese conquerors. Essentially, the city’s foreign community saved thousands of lives by just being there as observers, and the Japanese have never atoned for their atrocious behavior. Screenplay by directors Guttentag and Sturman, with writer Elizabeth Bentley (88 min., 2007).
