My Name Is My Own

When: Dec. 5-March 5, 4:30 p.m. 2020

Certain people have created narratives around Muslim, Arab, and Middle Eastern people and culture, often false, in order to make it easier to instill fear and back draconian immigration policies. Sarah O’Neal, a queer Black Moroccan American poet who has performed at the Empowering Women of Color Conference, The Kennedy Center, and UC Davis, means to change that. The English Literature/Ethnic Studies graduate of Mills College will be teaching a ten-week long creative writing workshop for Muslim, Arab, SWANA, and Middle Eastern youth, ages 14-19, that will culminate into a published book. The series promises young writers a deeper understanding and relationship to their identities and how they’ve been formed, and informed, by their heritage. Write on.
