My Morning Jacket

When: Fri., Dec. 2, 7:30 p.m. 2011

As classic rock 'n' roll performers go, Jim James and Sharon Jones are at the top of the field. James fronts My Morning Jacket, a band whose live shows have become famous not only for their high energy and theatrics, but for the lead singer's ability to turn inward and get intimate. He comes off as a regular guy who just so happens to have an angelic set of pipes. My Morning Jacket is currently on tour to support its tenth studio album, Circuital, which was released earlier this year. Opening act Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings should be a nice counterpoint. Though Jones is well into her fifties, her verve is boundless. She's got a voice that honors Aretha as much as it does James Brown, and with the funk and soul perfectionists from Daptone Records (who also backed up Amy Winehouse) at her back, she never misses. At Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (99 Grove St., San Francisco) on Friday, Dec. 2. 7:30 p.m., $45.
