My Life as a Zucchini

Rated PG-13 66 minutes 2017

Despite its basically dour, melancholy mood, director Claude Barras and writer Céline Sciamma’s animated drama succeeds as a grownup-friendly kids’ story designed to promote hope, in the institutionalized adventures of a neglected boy named Courgette (the French word for “zucchini”) and his stay at a foster home after a family tragedy. Courgette’s face is enough to break the viewer’s heart, thanks to animator Barras’ expressive drawing. Proof that sometimes the simplest and most predictable stories can resonate far past their apparent limitations (68 min., 2016, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
