My Dog Tulip

Rated NR 81 minutes 2010

In Paul and Sandra Fierlinger’s charming, exceptionally well drawn animated character study, a solitary gay Londoner (voice of Christopher Plummer) adopts an “Alsatian bitch” named Tulip, and his life changes completely. The film, adapted from the memoir by J.R. Ackerley, Tulip’s master, sets its tone with lines like this: “Unable to love each other, the English turn naturally to dogs.” The Fierlingers’ artwork is beautiful – line drawings filled in digitally with a watercolor effect – and we learn more about the mating habits of German shepherds than we really want to know. But then, it’s a love story. Also with the voices of the late Lynn Redgrave and Isabella Rossellini. (83 min.)
