My Best Friend's Girl

Rated R 101 minutes 2008

Given the darkly humorous first half of My Best Friend’s Girl, one gets the impression that writer Jordan Cahan actually delivered a relatively successful deconstruction of romantic comedies before the studio slapped a conventional second half onto it. The result? Tank Turner (Dane Cook) is such a douchebag that other guys hire him to take their exes out so they look better by comparison. When Tank’s best friend, Dustin (Jason Biggs), hires him to do the same with his ex, Alexis (Kate Hudson), Tank falls for Alexis and ... well, you’ve seen the rest of the rom-com a hundred times before. Except here it’s even less entertaining. Somewhere along the way, the filmmakers forgot you’re supposed to care about the couple getting together (101 min.).
