My Afternoons with Margueritte

Rated NR 82 minutes 2010

He may be fatter than Marlon Brando at his most whale-like, but Grard Depardieu can still reach down and deliver a tender-hearted performance in deep character, as in this very sweet, suitably modest character study about a simple soul named Germain Chazes (Depardieu) and his impromptu relationship with the eponymous kindly, bookish, old woman (Gisle Casadeus) who has valuable life lessons to impart in their provincial French town. Its the sort of role we imagine that Depardieu can toss off with ease, the cinematic equivalent of uncomplicated comfort food. But the two actors and director/co-writer Jean Becker treat it as if it were a masterpiece. And maybe it is. Costarring Sophie Guillemin. (82 min.)
