Music by Darius Milhaud and Igor Stravinsky

When: Fri., Oct. 2, 8 p.m. 2009

The annual Darius Milhaud Concert, held in honor of MillsCollege's illustrious former music instructor, is always a treat. Jointly presented by the Mills College Music Department and the Center for Contemporary Music, the concert pairs Stravinsky's marvelous "L'histoire du Soldat" ("The Soldier's Tale") with Milhaud's rarely encountered "La Mort d'un Tyran" for voices, percussion, piccolo, tuba, and clarinet, and his much later Second Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion. Conducted by the fabulous Nicole Paiement, performers include Carla Kihlstedt, William Winant, Robert Schwartz, Kristin Pankonin, Jennifer Curtis, and Mills musicians and chorus. At Littlefield Concert Hall, MillsCollege (5000 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland) on Friday, Oct. 2. 8 p.m., free. 510-430-2296 or Music.mills.edu/events
