Rated R 134 minutes 2017

Old-fashioned-looking Deep South family saga gets major mileage from its careful characterizations and unflinching social honesty, courtesy director Dee Rees (Pariah) and screenwriter Virgil Williams, adapting Hillary Jordan’s novel. The white McAllan family and their cotton-farming Black tenants, the Jacksons, get along fitfully in the Mississippi Delta during the World War II years, under the shadow of the Ku Klux Klan. Acting honors to the entire large cast, particularly Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell as the interracial army buddies, Carey Mulligan and Jason Clarke as the McAllans, and Mary J. Blige and Rob Morgan as the Jacksons. And Jonathan Banks is appropriately ugly as the racist Pappy McAllan. A gratifying story of strong emotions, raw injustice, and courage (134 min., 2017, rated R)
