Rated R 120 minutes 2017

Writer-director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler) runs a slender concept into the ground with the increasingly delirious story of an apprehensive wife (Jennifer Lawrence) trying desperately to arrange a home and start a family, despite her poet husband’s (Javier Bardem) habit of ignoring her and inviting disagreeable strangers into the house. Nothing is quite so awkward as a strained allegory with delusions of grandeur. The performances of Lawrence, Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Gleeson brothers, Domhnall and Brian, are wasted on Aronofsky’s Freudian nightmare, a reductive fright pageant reminiscent of other, more cohesive films by Polanski, Buñuel, Von Trier, Cronenberg, et al.
