Most Inventive Local Beer

The best thing about the East Bay's much-ballyhooed Beer Renaissance? There are now so many great new local beers to choose from. The worst thing? After awhile, they tend to blend together. Not Buzzerkeley, which is fermented with champagne yeast, thereby imbuing it with a tart, summery, sharply carbonated, unfathomably crisp mouthfeel that has all the lightness of a dry white wine, but all the grassy, hoppy flavor of a beer. Made by the Walnut Creek-based Calicraft Brewing Company and available on tap at restaurants and bars including Belli Osteria and 1400 Bar and Grill, as well as in champagne-style 750 mL bottles at better bottle shops and liquor stores, this is a beer that will appeal equally to people who don't like beer and to die-hard hop-heads who are looking for something new and unique — and, like the city it's named for, there's nothing else like it.
