The sound of the void flows through your body undestroyed, sings Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Moses Sumney. The lyric is from the appropriately titled song “Lonely World” off Sumney’s exceptional debut record, Aromanticism. The record drifts with gentle cosmic beauty — it’s part Frank Ocean-esque surreal soul and part Dirty Projectors art-rock. But mostly it’s an incredibly internal record, sad yet freeing in the way that claiming your dark feelings can be. There’s a lot of subtle harmonies buried in the floating synths and guitar soundscapes that back Sumney’s powerful falsetto, but mostly the tracks rely on their simplicity for maximum impact. Sumney likes to keep his music “incomplete” in order to retain an element of improvisation. And herein lies the treat of seeing him live in concert: He fleshes out the songs in whatever direction they want to go.
