When you walk into Mo’s Hut, a Hawaiian and Samoan barbecue spot in East Oakland’s Fruitvale District, the first thing that hits you is the smell — a heady mix of soy sauce, caramelized sugar, and charred meat. Grilled meats are the dish to get — all of them marinated in an addictive, not-too-sweet housemade teriyaki sauce. Don’t miss the Polynesian-style potato and macaroni salad and the wickedly tasty corned beef — a Samoan staple. Most customers order hearty, shockingly inexpensive combo platters. This is a takeout joint, first and foremost, but for a place that doesn’t have a lot of amenities, Mo’s exudes a charm that is disproportionate to its humble setup. (We particularly loved how the owners spruced up the bulletproof takeout window so it had a Polynesian grass hut kind of vibe.)
