Talk about a game-changer! Mos Def’s 1999 debut solo-album changed the way that people thought about what hip-hop was and what it could do. The follow-up to his and partner Talib Kweli’s Blackstar (1998), the album was an ebullient homage to the form, while continuing to critique it as the pair had done in their first outing. Unlike what was being put out at the time, Black On Both Sides leans heavily on live instrumentation and Def’s surprising vocal chops, while establishing him as one of the best “new school” MCs around. Old School royalty Slick Rick will join Mos, along with Erykah Badu and Souls of Mischief to pay tribute to one of the most beloved records in Hip-Hop history.
