The young director (Legally Blonde's Robert Kuketic) and the cinematographer of this ill-tempered, low-wattage sitcom take such cruel glee in exposing every wrinkle and ravage that's descended upon 68-year-old Jane Fonda that after getting a look at her first movie in 15 years, she might go stick her head in the oven. She's the "monster" of the title a conniving mother who will do anything to wreck the romance between her beloved doctor-son (Michael Vartan) and a sweet young thing (incompetent Jennifer Lopez) but that doesn't necessarily mean that she should look like a cross between Medusa and the Elephant Man. Maybe the moviemakers work for the John Birch Society. Ill-tempered and mean-spirited, the entire movie's as ugly as Fonda's made to look.
