Monica Wesolowska

When: Thu., March 7, 7 p.m. 2013

In Holding Silvan, Monica Wesolowska describes what can only be the most harrowing experience for a brand new mother: having to make the choice of life or death for a days-old son born with the grimmest of prognoses. In the memoir that follows, Wesolowska explores her own coming of age, from a young Catholic girl to a hopeful mother-to-be, all brought into harsh focus through the events surrounding her childbirth. Yet, despite the weight of the subject matter, Wesolowska's greatest accomplishment may be, according to fellow Berkeley author Ayelet Waldman, "that the story of the death of a child is, in fact, life-affirming." Join Wesolowska on Thursday, Mar. 7, as she discusses Holding Silvan at Books Inc. (1760 Fourth St., Berkeley). 7 p.m., free. BooksInc.net
