When: Third Monday of every month, 8 p.m. Continues through March 18
In 1994, James Kleinmann, Brighde Mullins, and Denise Shama founded PlayGround as a space for emerging scriptwriters to further develop their storytelling skills and showcase their progress. Some of the playwrights’ later work has been recognized by Aurora Theatre’s Global Age Project — and when their scripts have gone to the big screen, even the Sundance Film Festival. In its 25th year, PlayGround has brought back “Monday Night Playground,” which is a script-in-hand reading series where writers are given a topic and only a few days to finish an original script. This month’s event will feature six chosen works picked from PlayGround’s writers, like Linda Amayo-Hassan or Alanna McFall, falling under the theme, “Fall Down, Get Up.” It’s inspired by a Confucius quote: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” As a bonus, audience members get to play producer for a night and vote for which project should be considered for the Best of PlayGround Festival next May. The series continues monthly through March.
